Lecture and demonstration on the history of the sound recording industry from 1888-1892. Discusses initial negotiations between recording artists and engineers, and creative developments regarding recording content and presentation strategies. Presentation includes representative audio artifacts from the 1880s and 1890s, including the oldest known American musical records. Includes examples of Brady records, sound effects in descriptive musical works, and recordings of the U.S. Marine Band, singer Effie Smith, and other bands and individual artists. Includes discussion on the relationships and negotiations of those involved in making decisions about early commercial recordings, such as choosing to include replicated audience applause or introductory comments.
